What it Means?

What Zakat actually is

Zakat is a fixed portion, 2.5 percent, of wealth that has sat above a minimum threshold for a full lunar year. It is not charity in the general sense, it is an obligation calculated on savings, gold, business assets, and similar wealth, then given to those who qualify to receive it.

Understanding Nisab

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth you must have before Zakat becomes due at all. It is set using the value of either 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Since silver is worth less per gram, the silver Nisab is a lower bar, which is why many scholars consider it the more cautious and inclusive choice.

  • The Hawl condition matters. Zakat is only due on wealth that has stayed at or above Nisab for one full lunar year, not money that just passed through your hands.
  • Debts reduce your total. Immediate debts you owe are subtracted before your Zakatable wealth is calculated.
  • This is a general guide. Scholars differ on some details, like whether Zakat applies to worn jewelry. For your specific situation, a knowledgeable local scholar is the best source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I pay Zakat on gold jewelry I wear regularly?

Scholars are divided on this. Many hold that Zakat applies to all gold and silver regardless of use, while others exempt jewelry worn for personal use. This calculator includes it by default, following the more cautious view.

What if my wealth is below Nisab?

No Zakat is due this year. You are only obligated once your total Zakatable wealth reaches or exceeds the Nisab threshold and stays there for a full lunar year.

Should I use the gold or silver Nisab standard?

The silver standard is lower, so it means more people qualify to pay and more wealth reaches those in need. It is widely considered the safer choice, though both are accepted views.
